A good question

My husband just asked me a fabulous question; "How common is this unicorn thing?"

Fabulous question.

Our fertility Doctor has said its uncommon and that I will never be allowed multiples with my uterus, but there is a bit more to it.

Possible complications:

Many women with the unicorn uterus may be asymptomatic and unaware they have it. This was certainly my experience. It seems unless you have problems as a result of it there would be no reason to investigate and therefore perhaps no reason to be aware you are a unicorn at all.

For us unicorns, normal pregnancy may occur. However, it looks as though there can be a few more reasons for precaution (if you know that is!).

In some study that they site on Wikipedia, only 50% of unicorn mums delivered a live baby. This seems extraordinary. Additionally, the rates for ectopic pregnancy was 2.7%, for miscarriage 34%, and for preterm delivery 20%, while the intrauterine demise rate was 10%.

All in all, they conclude that unicorn mums (or ‘patients with a unicornuate uterus’) are at a higher risk for pregnancy loss and obstetrical complications. You think! These stats are a scary - I will be sure to ask my Dr about this next time I see him.

So, how uncommon?

Although it claims to be ‘very uncommon’, most sites claim that the unicorn uterus occurs in about 1/4,000 women. This doesn’t seem that uncommon to me. For something that no one seems to know much about. Or should I say no one I have spoken to seems to even know it’s a thing.

Maybe I don’t know the people in the know with these matters…!
